Miller Open to Coming off Bench, Reunites with Haslem

Miami, July 19 – Not everything is clear heading into the upcoming season for recently acquired HEAT guard Mike Miller. Miller, who signed with the HEAT on July 16, doesn't know if he will be starter or a reserve. And with no team practices, he's still not totally familiar with the HEAT's system or schemes yet.

But with the Big Three of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh as his teammates, one thing is clear--he will be open, and a lot.

"There should be a lot of open looks," Miller said during Monday's teleconference with Miami media. "There's no question about it."

The 10-year pro ranked second in the NBA last season with the Washington Wizards, connecting on a career-best 48 percent from downtown. Despite spending all but one season of his NBA career as a starter--the lone exception being when he came off the bench 65 times for the Grizzlies during the 2005-06 season--Miller said Monday that he is not opposed to playing a reserve role again.

Miller was the runaway winner for 2005-06 Sixth Man of the Year.

He also admitted that when he signed with the HEAT last week that HEAT President Pat Riley did not mention his specific role on the team.

"We haven't discussed it," he said. "We discussed the possibilities of the kind of team we could put out there at different times of the game, if you want to go big, want to go small."

If coming off the bench means playing behind Wade and James, the former Rookie of the Year said his is fine with that.

"Yeah, I think we can chalk those guys in as the starters," he jokingly said. "It'll probably be a role that I'll play and I have no problem with that.

"I don't think it will be a hard adjustment," he continued. "I think the sixth-man role was something that was fun for me, anyways. I think it's something that obviously is different than starting.

Signing with the HEAT pairs Miller up with college roommate and teammate, Udonis Haslem. The two helped lead Florida to the 2000 NCAA title game against Michigan State. Miller said the two former Gators have talked for years about the chance to be teammates one more time.

"To give us a chance to do it again, it's just an exciting time. He's one of my best friends, obviously, one of favorite teammates of all time."

The two may have come up short on college's biggest stage. Now the duo must focus in on the NBA's biggest prize--an NBA Championship.

"We felt like we had some unfinished business at Florida," he said.

HEAT Signs Juwan Howard

MIAMI, July 20 – The Miami HEAT announced today that they have signed free agent forward Juwan Howard. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“This is a great addition for us,” said HEAT President Pat Riley. “We feel that Juwan’s ability to play both the four and five spot will be complimentary to what we have put together. He also gives us incredible professionalism and is a perfect fit behind Chris Bosh and Udonis Haslem.”

“This is a great opportunity in order to play in the City of Miami for the HEAT organization,” said Howard. “I’m looking forward to working hard this upcoming season and contributing in any way I can toward the success of the team both on and off the court.”

After 14 years, Pat Riley finally has Juwan Howard. Howard joined the Miami Heat on Tuesday, signing a deal that won't raise the ire of NBA officials - unlike his first agreement with Riley. In July 1996, Howard signed a $100 million, seven-year contract with Miami that was ultimately voided by the league because the Heat had gone over the salary cap.
After all this time, Riley thinks Howard will fit his team again. And for a veteran's minimum salary, the NBA won't complain either.

Dwyane Wade on Late Night

Dwyane Wade went on Jay Leno last night to recruit 84-year old legendary comedian Don Rickles to the Miami HEAT. The NBA superstar also polished off some his own vintage rap for the audience. L2MS

All The Changes And The Heat Still Need A True Point Guard

LeBron James will play some point guard for the Miami Heat. So will Dwyane Wade, as he has throughout his NBA career. Mike Miller will likely do some ballhandling as well.

Thing is, none of them are true point guards.
And that means this Heat summer of change still has some things left to address -- particularly finding a starter at the point spot.
Mario Chalmers is under contract, Carlos Arroyo is expected to re-sign with the Heat and there's some talk of a possible Miami reunion with 2006 title-team point guard Jason Williams. Whomever it is, the next starter for the Heat will inherit the keys to what could be one of basketball's most dynamic offenses with Wade, James and Chris Bosh.

Chalmers' offseason took a hit when he badly sprained his left ankle while working out earlier this month, and he could be in a cast for up to three more weeks. When training camp opens in late September, he's expected to be fully ready to work.
"I think Mario is someone we're going to depend on a lot,'' Wade said.

Doubters, naysayers serve as motivation for Wade

Dwyane Wade is keeping track. He's heard analysts say this Miami Heat lineup will be a flop. He's heard other players lash out over the way LeBron James made his decision. He's heard executives from other teams list Boston and Orlando as the teams to beat in the Eastern Conference.

All duly noted in Wade's mind.
He's not bothered nor angered, he says. But at the Summer Groove charity game Wade co-hosted Sunday with Alonzo Mourning, he acknowledged that when the Heat convene for training camp in late September, the naysayers will serve as motivation for himself, for James, for Chris Bosh and everyone else inside the reloaded Miami locker room.
"My whole career is built on fuel,'' Wade said. "It's always been there. It's not going to change what I do with my life. It's not going to change the way I am as a person. But it fuels you. And we all need that. Every athlete, every competitor needs something to fuel them. It's going to happen throughout the year.''
After an offseason with little time to relax, Wade got back to doing what he prefers Sunday - playing basketball. With a dozen NBA pals, Wade entertained a crowd of about 15,000 fans in a glorified exhibition of dunking, 3-pointers and a halftime concert by Flo Rida. Common, the Grammy-winning rapper, was on one bench and boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. coached Wade's team.
Mayweather wouldn't talk about the status of talks with Manny Pacquiao for the fight that the boxing world most wants to see. But ask him about the prospects of Wade, James and Bosh playing together, and Mayweather spoke volumes.
"Hopefully, LeBron James has the same chemistry with the Heat that he had with the Cavaliers,'' Mayweather said. "Maybe a little bit better.''
James wasn't there for the festivities Sunday, nor was Bosh. But there has clearly been a giant spike in Heat buzz since they all announced they would play together. Outside the arena for the charity, parking lots that typically charge $10 a spot for NBA games wanted $20. Fans begged for autographs, and Wade said there was more excitement than after the 2006 title.
"It's going to be crazy,'' former Heat forward Dorell Wright said.
He would know.
Wright was one of the players who left Miami this summer to make room for all the upgrades to the roster. He's a close friend of Wade, who is a godfather to Wright's son. But when Golden State made Wright an offer, he decided that it was time for a new beginning.
"I'm just glad I'm getting out of the way,'' Wright said.
The new nameplates are already up in the Miami locker room. "James 6'' and "Bosh 1'' have already been installed just down from Wade's cubicle. The proximity of the stars, within about 12 feet of each other, isn't sitting well with Wade, who joked the new arrangement won't work.
It's his lone complaint of the summer.
The Heat kept Udonis Haslem, Joel Anthony and Jamaal Magloire, traded Michael Beasley and added Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Mike Miller. Deals with Magloire and Juwan Howard will be announced later this week. Carlos Arroyo is on the cusp of returning, and James Jones said Sunday that he'll be coming back as well - even though it'll be at a lower salary.
"I have to come back. This is not something I could pass up,'' Jones told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "This is too much of an opportunity to bypass.''
In a few days, Miami has gone from a young team to a veteran one with title aspirations.
"When it comes to the top players and the excitement of players, you can't put a price tag on experience and we're bringing that in with guys like Juwan and Big Z and Mike Miller and of course UD coming back,'' Wade said. "We went last year and the last two years of having a pretty young team of guys. Now we're a veteran-type team.''
And that team will have a bulls-eye, Wade said. He expects that when the NBA schedule comes out in a few weeks, teams around the league will check first to see when they're playing the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers, then when they'll face the Heat.
"We're not even the champions but we're going to get that kind of attention from teams,'' Wade said. "It's a respect factor.''
That "respect factor,'' as he put it, is what matters more than any doubters.
Wade knows what Miami will have in the locker room, and to him, that's more important than what any outside entity might say about the Heat summer of 2010.
"I'm not really concerned about what people say any more,'' Wade said. "I've made my comments. Inside here, we know how competitive we're going to be. At the end of the day, we've got to play the game of basketball. We'll all see then. There's not much to say.''

Heat agree to terms with James Jones

A league source says that the Miami Heat have convinced forward James Jones -- who they just bought out two weeks ago to clear additional cap space for LeBron James and Chris Bosh -- to return to the Heat next season. Terms of the new deal were not immediately available.
Miami bought out the final three years of Jones's five-year, $23 million deal, paying approximately $1.8 million to Jones this year to get out of the rest of his old deal, which would have paid him $4.65 million next season. The savings gave the Heat enough cap space to convince James and Bosh to take less than maximum deals to join Dwyane Wade next season. The 29-year-old Jones had played his last two seasons in Miami but was injured for large stretches of the last two seasons.
When healthy, Jones has been a strong 3-point shooter, including a career-high 44 percent from behind the arc in 2007-08 with Portland. He would provide Miami with a solid role player who could relieve either Wade or James at either wing position

Heat continue to fill roster by re-sign Magloire

Center Jamaal Magloire has re-signed with the Miami Heat for the coming season.

It'll be the third season Magloire spends with Miami, which wanted him back to bolster its depth inside. Magloire has averaged 7.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in his 10 NBA seasons with one All-Star appearance.
Magloire averaged 2.1 points and 3.4 rebounds, while shooting 50.4 percent from the field in 23 games as a reserve for Miami last season.
He becomes the 10th player to sign with Miami for 2010-11, including the fourth center.

HEAT Signs Zydrunas Ilgauskas

MIAMI, July 17- The Miami HEAT announced today that they have signed free agent center Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

we continue to shape our roster, we have filled a key position with the addition of Zydrunas,” said HEAT President Pat Riley. He is a two-time All-Star, a proven rebounder, and a great shot blocker. His place in NBA history is already clear, and we are pleased to be able to add a seasoned veteran of his caliber to our roster.

Ilgauskas, who will wear #11 for the HEAT, was originally selected with the 20th pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1996 NBA Draft.

HEAT Signs Dexter Pittman

MIAMI, July 16 - The Miami HEAT announced today that they have signed second round draft selection Dexter Pittman. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

One of our priorities in the draft was to make sure that we could augment the depleted center position with the loss of Jermaine Neal, said HEAT President Pat Riley. Dexter has the size and agility to be a very productive player for us in the long run, and there is no better place for him to improve than in the Miami HEAT system.

Pittman, a 6'10, 290-pound center, played all four seasons at the University of Texas appearing in 134 games (59 starts) and averaged 6.6 points and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 62.3 percent from the field and 60.1 percent from the foul line. He finished his senior season leading the team in both field goal percentage (.654) and blocks (63) while earning the team’s Most Improved Player honor as both a freshman and junior.

Pittman was selected by the HEAT with the 32nd pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.

HEAT Re-Signs Joel Anthony

MIAMI, July 16 - The Miami HEAT announced today that they have re-signed center Joel Anthony. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

This contract with Joel Anthony is a testament to the man who is second to none; who has worked hard and deserved this,” said HEAT President Pat Riley. “We felt that what he has done over the last couple of years in developing his game, his body and his knowledge warrants this reward. If other NBA non-drafted free agents want a prototype to follow, Joel Anthony is that man.

Anthony originally signed with the HEAT as a free agent on July 3, 2007, then re-signed with the club on July 20, 2009.

HEAT Signs Mike Miller

MIAMI, July 16 – The Miami HEAT announced today that they have signed free agent guard Mike Miller. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“From the first moment that we met Mike on July 1, it seemed like it would be a match made in heaven,” said HEAT President Pat Riley. “We consider him to be the finest perimeter shooter in the NBA. But also he is a multi-faceted player who can rebound, handle the ball and make plays. We expect big things from him.”

Miller has appeared in 692 career games (528 starts) with four teams over 10 seasons. During his career, he has averaged 13.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 32.4 minutes while shooting 46.4 percent from the field and 40.5 percent from three-point range. He was selected as the NBA’s Rookie of the Year following the 2000-01 season, and was the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year following the 2005-06 season.

Miller, who will wear #13 for the HEAT, was originally drafted with the fifth pick in the 2000 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic. He was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2002-03 season, and then traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves prior to the 2008-09 season. He was then acquired by the Washington Wizards prior to the start of the 2009-10 season, and spent one season playing for the Wizards before signing as a free agent with the HEAT.

HEAT Re-Signs Udonis Haslem

MIAMI, July 12 – The Miami HEAT announced today that they have re-signed forward Udonis Haslem. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“I am excited to be back,” Haslem said. “It’s a great opportunity to win. Miami has always been my home, and I’m happy I can play here for years to come.”

Haslem has led the HEAT in total rebounds and defensive rebounds in each of the past five seasons, and has led the team in offensive rebounds and rebound average in each of the last four seasons. He has also served as the team captain for the last three seasons, and along with teammate Dwyane Wade, are the only HEAT players remaining from the 2006 championship team. He and Wade are also the only two HEAT players to play together for at least seven seasons.

During the 2009-10 season, Haslem came off the bench in each of the 78 games in which he appeared, averaging 9.9 points, a team-leading 8.1 rebounds and 27.9 minutes, while shooting 49.4 percent from the field and 76.2 percent from the foul line. He led the NBA in double-doubles off the bench with 21 and led the HEAT in offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds and total rebounds.

Haslem was not drafted by the NBA out of college. He was originally signed by the HEAT as a free agent on August 6, 2003. He then re-signed with the club on August 2, 2005.

HEAT Sends Beasley To Timberwolves

MIAMI, July 12 – The Miami HEAT announced today that they have traded forward Michael Beasley to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for two second round draft picks (2011 and 2014).

“We felt Michael had two very good years in Miami,” said HEAT President Pat Riley. “We feel he will have a very productive career, and wish him nothing but the best as he moves on.”

In his two seasons with the HEAT, Beasley appeared in 159 games (97 starts), averaging 14.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 27.3 minutes, while shooting 46.1 percent from the field. During the 2009-10 season, Beasley started each of the 78 games he appeared in, averaging 14.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.03 steals in 29.8 minutes.

Beasley was drafted by the HEAT with the second pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.

On Stage Interview with Wade, Bosh and James - July 9, 2010

ERIC REID: It's Dwyane Wade's house, but it's now also LeBron James' kingdom. LeBron, on behalf of all South Florida, thank you. Welcome. How does it feel wearing a Heat uniform?

LEBRON JAMES: Wow. I mean, it feels right. It feels right. And to be in this position to wear this Heat uniform every single night, we're going to make the world know, not just this league, we're going to make the world know that The Heat is back.

ERIC REID: LeBron, you met with six teams. They all made very professional presentations to you. What stood out about The Heat's visit with you when you met with The Heat brass?

LEBRON JAMES: I think Pat and Micky, Nick Arison, those guys, everyone who came up, they were stand up guys. The organization is a close knit group. It's all about family, and that's what I'm all about. When they said we had the possibility of all of us joining together also, I couldn't turn that down.

ERIC REID: So it's Wade's house, LeBron's kingdom, and Bosh's pit, baby. Visitors beware. Visitors beware. Enter at your own risk. Chris, in 2008, the three of you were on the United States Olympic team in Beijing and on your way to gold. And this is a solid gold trio, baby. On your way to gold, you guys began to dream about some day playing together. A few days ago you thought it might be pie in the sky. That pie tastes pretty good right now.

CHRIS BOSH: It's great.

ERIC REID: Welcome to Miami, Chris.

CHRIS BOSH: Thank you.

ERIC REID: What do you want to tell these people?

CHRIS BOSH: Well, I'm not going to lie to you. When I first heard the possibility of all three of us playing together, I really had to go home and think about it. I said there's no way. Of course it sounds nice, but I'm not sure it's going to happen.

The days and months not the days, the months, but the months passed by and me and Dwyane, we wanted to come here, and then LeBron wanted to come. I mean, let's get it done, man. Let's get this thing done.

ERIC REID: I want to ask you two a question first. Chris, first of all, what turned you on to coming down here. What was your presentation like from the Miami Heat? What stood out to you?

CHRIS BOSH: Like LeBron said, it's about family here and the organization. And every time I hear the Miami Heat, I hear first class. That's all I hear from everybody.

And I was telling my friends, you know, this is a world class organization and a world class city and a world class arena. And we're going to bring some world class basketball to this arena with these guys right here.

ERIC REID: Jose has a question for you, Chris.

JOSE PAÑEDA: Chris, talking about world class. You might have been watching the World Cup. You see the passion. But there's no more passion than this Latin Hispanic city of Miami. (Spanish). We do everything here with salsa, with merengue and with some serious passion. Now, Dwyane, Dwyane might have told you a little bit about it here. He knows a few words in Spanish. I know I taught him a few. LeBron, I don't know about you, we'll work on you. Don't worry, we'll get it. But I hear I hear (Spanish).

CHRIS BOSH: Si.

JOSE PAÑEDA: For Latin fans, and they are numerous out here, why don't you give them some taste of your Spanish. (Spanish).

CHRIS BOSH: (Spanish).

JOSE PAÑEDA: (Spanish).

CHRIS BOSH: (Spanish).

ERIC REID: You know, we know South Florida's Hispanic community loves the Three Kings parade. It just started. I want to go back to Dwyane and LeBron for a moment. Guys, you've had some of the greatest match ups individually in NBA history. It's been show stopping every time you two step on the floor. Tell these fans your thoughts about wearing your Superman capes for the same team. What's it going to be like, Dwyane?

DWYANE WADE: You know, I look forward to day one, to every matchup against LeBron. And now I guess I'm going to have to look forward to every practice against LeBron. Because it's going to be amazing to be on the court, to know that connection that we have. Not only will we be playing against each other, but when we have played together, it's going to be there. It's just a look. And you know it's time to turn it on. So I feel sorry for whoever gotta guard both of us.

ERIC REID: There is not enough kryptonite out there; there is not. LeBron, what is this going to be like?

LEBRON JAMES: I mean, just like D Wade just said, we're going to challenge each other in practice. And the way we're going to challenge each other to get better in practice, once the game starts, I mean, it's going to be easy.

I mean, with me and D Wade running a wing, Pat could come back and play like he was back in his Kentucky days. Just throw it up there, we're going to get it.

ERIC REID: We know you guys are going to enjoy the sun and the fun and all the spoils of South Florida. But we also know you Three Kings came down here to win championships, not one. Championships.

LEBRON JAMES: Not two.

ERIC REID: Tell us about that.

LEBRON JAMES: Not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, not seven. Hey, and when I say that when I say that, I really believe it. I'm not just up here blowing smoke at none of these fans, because that's not what I'm about. I'm about business. And we believe we can win multiple championships if we take care of business and do it the right way.

ERIC REID: I know you three guys are anxiously awaiting to see how the rest of this team is put together. What's important to you three guys as the rest of this team now will be assembled around the three of you? Dwyane, why don't you start.

DWYANE WADE: Sacrifice. This team right here is going to be built on sacrifice from all of us. And that's not just from a money standpoint. That's not just from a shot standpoint. That's everything about this. We're about business.

And we're going to have fun. Yeah, it's going to be Hollywood down here. Yeah. That's what they say, yeah. But when we step on the courts, it's going to be about business, and everyone who wants to be a part of this organization is going to have to make that sacrifice.

See, he just sacrificed his arm. Way to go.

ERIC REID: LeBron, we know you'll do everything humanly possible to win a championship here in Miami.

LEBRON JAMES: Absolutely. That's the only reason I'm here, man. I'm here to bring another championship, to bring that feeling you all had a few years ago, when y'all was able to win that championship. So me and C.B., we're here to make that feeling come back.

ERIC REID: Chris Bosh, you've got to feel like the luckiest big man in the world right now.

CHRIS BOSH: Oh, yeah. I mean, for one I get to when I get a rebound, I got LeBron on my left I can outlet to, and I have D Wade on my right. Like a video game. I don't know. I mean, that's all I gotta say.

Yeah, I'm lucky. I'm lucky. And you know what, everybody's been really receptive here. Thank you for coming out on such short notice, like you said before. This is amazing. This is amazing.

ERIC REID: You know what, Chris, we're all lucky. We are all lucky. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the first time in our beautiful 22 year history of the Miami Heat that you have seen this. It's unprecedented. It's out of this world. Let's hear it, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, your Miami Heat.

A New Beginning

By Christina De Nicola

Miami, 6/9 - Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and LeBron James received a hero's welcome Friday night at the AmericanAirlines Arena.

More than 13,000 fans attended the free event, which was announced earlier in the day. Thousands more watched live footage outside on MiamiMediaMesh.

The event featured the HEAT's free-agent re-signee and signees greeting fans and answering questions in the lower bowl.

Decked in HEAT uniforms, the trio entered a stage-complete with smoke and colorful lighting- via a forklift, and proceeded to shake fans' hands down a runway.

Spotlights were shown on Micky Arison, Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra, part of the group that traveled around the country to woo the trio that has come to be known as "Miami Thrice."

After receiving a standing ovation, Wade, Bosh and James received keys to the city and county.

Fans waved "Yes. We. Did." Posters and moved their clackers, both of which were handed out upon entrance into the arena.

"It's been exciting. It's been nerve-racking. I've been scared at times. I've been afraid. But at the same time I've accepted the challenge to move on. And I feel great," James said. "I feel great now and the fans and this organization have put me back in a family-oriented place where I've always been."

Bosh momentarily got the crowd to stop its chants of "Beat L.A." when he spoke a few lines in Spanish upon request from José Pañeda, the Spanish voice of the HEAT.

He would goon to express how lucky he feels for the opportunity to play in Miami, somewhere he can get cafecito on Calle Ocho.

"When I get are bound, I got LeBron on my left I can outlet to, and I have D-Wade on my right. Like a video game," he said. "I'm lucky. And you know what, everybody's been really receptive here. Thank you for coming out on such short notice, like you said before. This is amazing."

Last week while Riley courted James, nothing was guaranteed.

Flash had yet to sign, and Burnie was outside the AAA waiting for his announcement.

The Hall of Fame coach said that what struck James most during their three-hour meeting was the sense of family that the HEAT organization represents. And the championship rings.

Arison's son, Nick, has been around the team since he was 14. Spoelstra has worked with Riley for 15 years.

"And I think he understood that this is a group. This really is stability and it's about a family," Riley said. "So I think that more than anything else, this is what I thought about when I walked out there tonight."

Spoelstra admitted during the press conference that the plan to acquire all three superstars had been in place for a couple of years.

"We all knew about the plan," he said. "Probably more than anything, the single thing I've learned from Pat: Think big. He's been talking about the Triple Play. We used to laugh and sometimes our minds would wander. You start to get excited about it."

Now, with it a reality, the HEAT's head coach wishes he could get the players on the practice court for plays he has already drawn up.

Until then, Miami still has a roster to fill.

Talks continue with free agent Udonis Haslem, who has played his seven NBA seasons with the HEAT.

"I have a very good feeling that we're going to be able to do something to have UD consider," Riley said of the Miami native. "Again, he's like Zo. He's part of being an anchor here. So we'll do everything we can."

But the theme of the night was all about winning.

James tantalized the crowd with banter of possibly seven NBA championships on the way. Wade called Miami the new Hollywood. Bosh said he didn't mind other teams gunning for the HEAT.

"We're here to win a championship. We're not here to sell jerseys. We're not here to pump up ratings. You know, you don't make a decision like this," Wade said.

"LeBron didn't make a decision to leave his hometown. Chris didn't make a decision to leave Toronto to come here just to get out of the first round. Our goal is to win championships. If we don't do that, we're going to be harder on ourselves than you all can be on us."

Magic-Cavaliers Preview

With the longest winning streak in the NBA this season and the league's best record, the Cleveland Cavaliers look pretty unbeatable at the moment.
Then again, they looked that way to everyone but the Orlando Magic last spring.
Cleveland can tie its franchise record with a 13th straight win Thursday night against the Magic, who visit Quicken Loans Arena for the first time since stunning LeBron James and the Cavaliers in last season's Eastern Conference finals.
James won his first MVP award last season while leading Cleveland to a league-best 66-16 record, but Orlando shocked the Cavaliers in six games before losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA finals.
Little has changed in 2009-10. James (29.8 points per game) leads the league in scoring and has Cleveland (42-11) six games ahead of the Magic (36-17) for the East's best record heading into the teams' second meeting since late May.
James had 36 points in a 102-93 win at Orlando on Nov. 11.
"They're coming into our building, and right now we're the best team in the NBA,'' James said after finishing with 32 points and 11 assists Tuesday as the Cavaliers beat New Jersey 104-97 for their 12th consecutive victory. "It's going to be a fun one.''
Cleveland has won 21 of 22 at home.
James has been busy lately aside from averaging 38.3 points in his last three games. He and Olympic teammate Dwight Howard joined forces for a Super Bowl commercial, and they'll be playing together for the fourth time on the East All-Star squad Sunday in Dallas.
Far less likely to be shooting a commercial with Howard is Cavs center Shaquille O'Neal, who has taken his share of verbal shots at the player now controlling the paint in his former home.
O'Neal, acquired largely because of Cleveland's trouble dealing with Howard in the playoffs, held the Magic's big man to 11 points and seven rebounds in the November meeting.
"It's going to be a good matchup,'' said O'Neal, averaging 15.3 points on 63.9 percent shooting during the winning streak. "Hopefully they play me one on one and hopefully they let us play."
Orlando will likely see an entirely different Cleveland backcourt than what it faced in the playoffs. Mo Williams, who scored 28 points in the November meeting, remains out (sprained left shoulder) and Delonte West (broken left ring finger) could miss a 10th straight game.
The Magic are fully healthy and have played that way lately, quietly winning 10 of 12 to seize the East's second spot.
Vince Carter is starting to heat up along with his team. Orlando's much-maligned free agent acquisition has struggled for much of this season, but has averaged 24.2 points in his last five games.
Howard had a team-high 18 points and Carter added 15 to lead seven Orlando players in double figures Wednesday in a 107-87 win in Chicago.
"We had so many guys rolling tonight,'' said Carter, who had 29 points in November against Cleveland.
The Cavaliers will be getting their first look of the season at Magic forward Rashard Lewis, who was suspended for the first meeting. Lewis averaged 18.3 points in the East finals against Cleveland, but his 14.9-point average this season is his lowest since 2000-01.
The Cavaliers are 13-2 in the last two regular seasons when James scores at least 40 points, but Orlando has had success even when the reigning league MVP fills up the scoresheet. James topped 40 in three of the playoff games against the Magic, but Cleveland lost each time.
James, though, may now have the help he needs with O'Neal on his side.
"LeBron and I have pretty much the same formula: Stay dominant at home, beat teams you're supposed to beat and play above .500 on the road," O'Neal said. "Most of the time if you do that, things will go your way.''
The Cavaliers had a 13-game winning streak March 7-31, 2009
